Diablo 3 Barbarian vs Monk Tanking Analysis by Endgame
In Diablo III, two classes are standing out as the ‘go to' classes for tanking groups of mobs in a party situation.
As such, let's take a close look at the Slow Time and Diamond Skin mechanics of the Wizard and how they will impact tanking, and compare them to the cookie-cutter Gargantuan tank build of the Witch Doctor!
(Pause)
Don't go, I was only kidding!
(Still here?)
Okay, let's take an ability by ability look at the Barb and Monk and see what to expect for those whose noble job it is to get punched in the head for the sake of their group.
Dec 02, 2018 The Whirlwind Build is probably one of the most famous builds in Diablo 2 from the beginning to now. This classic uses the ability to ignore unit collision with the Whirlwind attack animation, making your Barbarian a spinning top of death. There is a glitch (still!) that can cause some of your WW Barb's attacks to not hit.
This post will focus on actual damage mitigation. Stuns and knockbacks aren't as useful situation to situation, so they won't be addressed. If you'd like them added in feel free to let your thoughts be known, however!

Writer's Opinion:
Barbarians will thrive in pack tanking, where Revenge will proc endlessly and heal back the damage sustained. Less options available for bosses, where fewer targets means smaller heals.
Monks won't have the armor and constant healing Barbarians do, but better mobility and Healing independent of dealing damage are big strengths.
I believe that the first Inferno clear that utilizes a Tanking strategy will rely on a Monk – but ultimately more clears will be done – and done faster – with Barbarians

Stat Priority | Patch 2.1.2
Managing Primary (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Vitality) and Secondary (Critical Chance, Critical Damage, Attack Speed, Weapon Damage, Armor, etc.) stats is critical for maximizing your Barbarian. Below are listed the two stat priorities for both max damage and max survivability.
Max DPS
Weapon Damage > Strength > Crit Chance >= Crit Damage > Attack Speed
Max Survivability
Resists = Armor > Strength = Vitality
DPS Stats Breakdown
Weapon Damage
Increases the damage dealt by skills. Higher top end weapon damage and a smaller damage range will produce stronger attacks.
Strength
Multiplies all Barbarian damage.

Crit Chance
Increases the base chance of obtaining a critical hit. Crit Chance is best stacked with Crit Damage at a ratio of about 1:8. For example, if you have 10% Crit Chance then you should have +80% Crit Damage. As a note, Crit Damage is much easier to obtain than Crit Chance so you may end up with more Crit Damage than is optimal for your amount of Crit Chance.

Crafting lightning dmg abyss jewel. Few questions about crafting Abyss Jewels. Jewel crafting was a really nice thing to start crafting. With the abundance of jewel drops in general, I don't think it's worth anymore. Regarding rolls: Almost any jewel that sells good, needs life, so try to get a life roll and a good damage mod. Adds 17 to 24 Physical Damage to Spells while holding a Shield. Adds 16 to 22 Physical Damage to Spells. Gain 4% of Physical Damage as Extra Fire Damage if you've dealt a Critical Strike Recently. A rare jewel can have only four affixes instead of six. It is possible to have a jewel in an unallocated slot. Jewels in unallocated slots have no effect. Some unique jewels affect other passive nodes within a certain radius. Abyss jewels are special types of jewels that can be socketed into jewel sockets as well as abyssal socket in items.
